Q&A Paper: Securing Digital Substations

Expert Answers to the Questions That Matter

During our webinar "Securing Digital Substations – Practical Ways to Minimize Cyber Threats," attendees asked dozens of highly technical questions that couldn't all be covered in detail during the live session.

To provide more comprehensive answers, our experts Anton Krupskii (Welotec) and Maciej Goraj (Westermo) have compiled this exclusive technical Q&A document.

Rather than summarizing the webinar, this companion guide expands on many of the topics discussed and provides practical guidance for engineers, utilities and system integrators working with digital substations.

Inside the Q&A

✔ How should digital substations be segmented?

✔ Are Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) suitable for OT environments?

✔ How does IEC 62443 apply to virtualized substations?

✔ Can virtualization actually improve cybersecurity?

✔ What happens if a hypervisor is compromised?

✔ Is physical separation more secure than virtual segmentation?

✔ Should substations still be air-gapped?

✔ What role will AI play in OT cybersecurity?

✔ What is an SBOM and why will it become essential?

✔ How should remote access be secured?

✔ What is Shadow IT and why should utilities care?

...and many more practical questions answered by industry experts.
